Boulevard | A revolutionary live music and theatre venue in Soho
When Boulevard first opened in 2019, it made quite a scene…
The theatre in Soho (named after the striptease venue that used to inhabit the same space in Walker’s Court, which itself replaced a brothel), was on the tip of anyone with even the smallest passing interest in the performing arts’ tongue when it reopened. Sadly though, its budding popularity was cut short when it was forced to close due to you-know-what. However, now, fast forward to 2023 and it looks like the theatre is starting to show signs of life again…
As the keystone of Walker’s Court’s £40 rehab, Boulevard initially got heads turning with its impressive space – both inside and out. The main auditorium has been cleverly designed so that it can be reconfigured at the drop of a hat, with both stalls & a balcony that move independently of each other, and can be rotated 360-degrees. The stage itself can also be moved up and down, and the chairs are free-standing (unlike traditional fixed-row theatre seating). All in all, it means that Boulevard can be almost unrecognisably transformed in just a few minutes – the idea being that you could watch a play and then later on listen to a little live music in a completely different space.
In its new incarnation, Boulevard’s programme leans heavily on that latter part. Several nights a week the venue plays host to live jazz courtesy of Soho Live Music Club (also behind Piano Bar Soho and The Shed Soho) who are mixing it between up-and-comers and stalwarts to put on the performances, rendering Boulevard more of a live music venue now.
On top of the shows, they’re also hosting night trains (weekly jazz sessions) on Fridays and Saturdays that run from 10pm until late. For these, they promise that ‘you’ll be entertained into the early hours of the morning with a mixture of incredible swing, jazz & blues’.
Different to the usual entertaining late night train ride on the weekend anyway…
NOTE: Boulevard is currently open for performances and in the hands of Soho Live Music Club. You can find out more and book tickets on their website, here
