A restaurant based around Alpine cheeses?
That idea is seems full of holes.
But thankfully, the people behind Alpes seem to have pulled it off. Based in one of the huge shipping containers at POP Brixton (which they’ve given a wooden, chalet-like makeover) it comes to us from long-time market traders the Raclette Brothers, and is the first restaurant in London to serve raclette on a traditional machine, scraping melted cheese in front of customers at the table. Here’s what they’re up to:
You’ll get a choice from the likes of Raclette de Savoie (a traditional high-Alpine cheese), Bermondsey Raclette from Kappacasein, and Raclette Jurrassienne, which is Alpes’s classic dish of melted Raclette draped over a selection of potatoes, pickles and optional pancetta for added crunch.
There are three types of fondue: Savoyarde, Blue and British with unlimited sides and dips of roast new potatoes, fries, salad, pickles and baguette to dip it into the stuff.
If, for some reason, you don’t like cheese, then you can still survive here. They have a short menu of dishes like beef cheeks with pancetta, shallots and pickled mushrooms; and asparagus with wild garlic, butter bean hummus & hazelnut pesto. You can even get a charcuterie platter from Borough Market’s own Cannon & Cannon. They’re designed to share…
