A couple of months back now the folks behind Clapton treasure P Franco had a bright idea…
They decided to take on a new venture, this time, opting for a laid-back, no-frills restaurant and wine bar in Hackney’s London Fields.
In fact, you’ll find it just off Mare Street, where they’ve taken over a warehouse space at the bottom of Netil House, and dressed it up with a simple but functional bar at the front, and a small open kitchen at the back. The rest is a mix of stripped-back light wood furniture, potted plants, as well as a couple of brightly coloured posters showcasing some of the old chef series back at Franco.
You won’t find any chef series here, however (at least not for the time being). Contrasting to their Clapton counterpart, Bright has a permanent kitchen team headed up by William Gleave & Giuseppe Belvedere. Together they bring experience from both 40 Maltby Street and Columbia Road’s prized Brawn, setting them in good stead to craft a regularly-rotating menu of modern European small plates, often with a little East Asian twist.
The exact dishes depend on the season and the freshest produce at the time. However they’re likely to be similar to things like ratte potatoes with sorrel and lemon koshō vinaigrette; grilled scarlet prawns; or (possibly our favourite dish to date) their katsu sando. They don’t take their foot off the gas when it comes to dessert either. In fact, more often than not you’ll find a selection of totally unique numbers like their pumpkin custard ice cream, served with a thirty year old balsamic glaze.
Of course, as you’d expect from a P Franco sibling, wine also plays a major part and – although not the main focus – has had a lot of thought put into it. The list isn’t huge but like the food, it’s always changing – plus there’s plenty of great choices by the glass. It also includes a house rosé crafted by the restaurant owners themselves. They made it together in Western Australia before bringing it home and serving it up on tap…
…another bright idea.
NOTE: Bright is open Tues-Thurs, 6pm-12am and Fri-Sun, 12pm-12am. For more information, or to book, visit their website here.
