It already sounds like an instruction to go to a tapas bar.
And now you’ll know exactly where to head – this pair of tapas and wine bars on Choumert Road, founded by born-and-raised Sevillian, Blanca Rowe. It started with the more restauranty of the two, Miss Tapas, which quickly became so popular with the locals that Blanca bought up the space next door to open El Segundo, serving Spanish-inflected brunches on weekends, and wines, sherries and cocktails by night.
Both sport pared-back but cosy interiors with a real neighbourhood feel – bare brick walls, menus scrawled on blackboards and stool seating around old wine barrels. Most importantly, however, there’s a warm welcome every time you go – even if they need to put your name on a list until a table becomes free.
Once settled in, you’ll be able to order a mountain of Andalusian dishes to your table, each made with care and top quality Spanish produce imported by the owners themselves… highlights of which include padrón peppers, quail eggs and chorizo, authentic tortilla, cod croquetas, pan con tomate and their famous ox cheek & mash.
After your feast you’d do well to toddle next door and bag a table at El Segundo. Order yourself a gin and tonic, served in huge Spanish copita goblets; a sherry from the well-curated selection; or a Spanish Negroni – a twist using sherry instead of vermouth – which you’ll spot patiently ageing in a barrel above the bar.
After a few of which, it’ll be time to roll out of there.
NOTE: Miss Tapas is generally walk-in only – so try to get along early if you can (they’ll put you on a list), or reserve one of the few bookable tables HERE. Miss Tapas is open Weds-Sun for dinner, plus weekend lunch.
